Territorial phonies
amplified steel needle, sound performance, and generative text
Territorial Phonies is a study of the sound potential of geological samples, or geophonetics.
Several geological samples are read with an amplified steel needle and then translated into square one-minute poems. In total, there are 27 pages of square poems containing 27 minutes of geological surface sound. Multiple geological samples have been read, with a single printed book for each sample. The books are printed on transparent material, revealing the evolving structure of the curves of the geological sample.
The amplified steel needle is a custom-made sound tool that uses the principles of gramophone needles. It is connected to an energized piezo plate. The piezo captures the micro-vibrations of the needle and translates them into a sound sequence, like a microphone.
